Top Dermatologist-Recommended Anti-Aging Treatments

As we mature, our skin needs more support in performing its regenerative processes. Your dermatologist will recommend an anti-aging treatment based on both your skin type and the degree of attention needed. The right treatment can help with fine lines and wrinkles, skin that has lost its firmness, age spots, and scars. Aging can’t be prevented, but with care, you can maintain your skin in radiant condition over the long term.

Anti-Aging Facials

Getting a facial is one of the easiest ways to help your skin rejuvenate itself. When you schedule a facial appointment with your dermatologist, they’ll formulate a mask based on your needs. They may use a light acid to exfoliate or a vitamin-rich cream that will deliver nutrients straight to your skin’s cells. Facials are relaxing treatments that leave your skin hydrated, nourished, and bright.

Microdermabrasion

In this procedure, your dermatologist uses a tool that is like a small buffer, which polishes the top layers of skin and removes dead cells and buildup. Microdermabrasion can help smooth skin, dull or erase fine lines and wrinkles (as well as some age spots and scars), and help treat acne. Recovery time for this option is usually just a few hours, so it’s a popular one for either upkeep or a refresher.

Chemical Peel

A chemical peel is another popular treatment for surface-level skincare. It’s performed using a safe, slightly acidic solution that your dermatologist can make as gentle or as intense as needed. This solution is best for fine lines and winkles, for exfoliation to even skin texture and tone, and for acne treatments. Chemical peels are great for quick touch-ups, corrective care, or regular maintenance.

Laser Treatments

Using light or laser therapy, your dermatologist can target age spots, acne scars, and stretch marks. The light vaporizes the unwanted pigment or loosens the bonds of scar tissue, stimulating repair. For general skin resurfacing to even out the texture, tone, and help reduce lines and wrinkles, the light breaks up the dead outer layer and heats up the dermis underneath, stimulating growth. Laser treatments can also be used for hair removal, to diminish unsightly veins, and to get rid of old tattoos.

Dermal Fillers and Botox®

Injectable treatments like dermal fillers and Botox® work differently, but both are applied below the epidermis to provide support to the skin. Fillers like Juvederm®, Restylane®, and Radiesse® provide volume to soft tissue in your lips or cheeks. These can also help to smooth out lines and wrinkles that are being caused by sunken or lax skin. Botox®, on the other hand, is a muscle relaxant, which reduces movement and can prevent lines and wrinkles from forming. Botox® and dermal fillers are administered by a needle. Both are temporary and need to be readministered after several months.

Finding the Treatment for You

Depending on your treatment and need, multiple sessions over a period of time might be necessary. You may require some downtime after the treatment for your skin’s redness to subside and any dead skin to shed. This will vary, and your dermatologist will let you know how long of a recovery period is necessary at your consultation before making any decisions.
